The legend of the Raintree states that he who seeks wealth and long life will find them beneath her boughs. This house style, with its sprawling galleries, is found in the mountain areas of the Piedmont. The galleries were pleasant places to sit during the afternoon heat and catch the cool mountain breezes. These buildings were also typical guest houses at 'The Springs,' where Virginians traditionally sought respite from the August heat. Each bedroom leads out to the spacious galleries. Today the children play on the galleries protected from the rain.
