Typical of houses built below the James in the Southern part of Virginia, this lovely home is suitable for the fairly steep sloping site, providing excellent views from the veranda which spans the rear. Detailing on the plan drawings of this house give the exterior a subtle appearance of having been an earlier house which was 'added to' at a later date. In the period of 1740, when the first
portion was built, only stone was available for the foundations. In 1820, when the addition was made, prosperity was settling in the states and brick was available.
Designed for a young family, this house places the informal entertainment areas in the lower floor with the formal area and master living area on the first floor.
